Qualified Charitable Distributions
Incorporating Qualified Charitable Distributions into your giving strategy is a win-win for the North Liberty Community Food Pantry and you.

Charitable giving is a noble act that benefits both the donor and the recipient. For those aged 70½ or older, incorporating Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) into your giving strategy can offer significant advantages, particularly when supporting local organizations like the North Liberty Community Pantry.

A QCD allows individuals to donate up to $100,000 annually from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) directly to a qualified charity, such as the North Liberty Community Food Pantry, without counting the distribution as taxable income. This strategy not only supports a worthy cause but also provides potential tax benefits, making it an efficient way to manage your required minimum distributions (RMDs).

One of the primary benefits of a QCD is that it can satisfy all or part of your RMD for the year, which is beneficial for those who do not need the additional income and want to avoid the tax burden associated with RMDs. By directing the distribution to the NLFP, you reduce your taxable income, which can be particularly advantageous if you do not itemize deductions and thus cannot deduct charitable contributions.

This allows you to directly support a cause that you care about – with your gift going straight to the mission you believe in and into the hands of a cause that matters to you - not along to the IRS. You do not pay taxes on the distribution and as a qualified charity, the North Liberty Community Food Pantry doesn’t pay taxes either!

At times like this, donations to food pantries are invaluable. They help fund vital programs that provide food assistance, personal care items, and community support to individuals and families in need. Your QCD ensures that more of your donation goes directly to these programs, maximizing the impact of your generosity.

To make a QCD, you must instruct your IRA custodian or financial advisor to transfer the funds directly to the North Liberty Food Pantry. Ensure that the distribution is made payable to the charity to qualify as a QCD and to reap the associated tax benefits.
